Knuckleheads Saloon, Kansas City, MO

It was 1887 when the old boarding house was built by the tracks. You could hear the music of the old west, the song of the cowboys and the trains. Today the old west and the trains sounds still can be heard, along with the sounds of todays BEST blues and honky tonk music in Kansas City. Not much has changed. It's still the best of the old and the new

Grand Emporium Saloon

3832 Main St, Kansas City, MO 64111 · 816-531-7557
No KC bar has offered live music so well, for so long as the Grand Emporium. Whether it is local matinees or blues legends wailing all night, this place is well-seasoned with greatness. It's known best for blues, but reggae, rockabilly, rock 'n' roll and jazz acts get mixed into formula as well. Slap on Amazing Grace's barbecue, factor in one of the coolest 45-rpm juke boxes in the world (listen to James Brown's version of 'Kansas City'), the excellent drink specials -- and this place becomes a must-see for locals and visitors alike. The New York Times agrees, naming it a Top 15 attraction in KC. The Memphis-based Blues Foundation agrees too -- tagging Grand Emporium the "Best Blues Club in America" twice. With that kind of reputation, you know this 300-capacity bar fills fast, especially for the national acts. That means dragging your feet will keep you from tapping your toes

B B's Lawnside Bar-B-Que

1205 E 85th St, Kansas City, MO 64131 · 816-822-7427
...The tradition of bar-b-q and blues in Kansas City had its start in the 1930's when Count Basie, Joe Turner and Charlie Parker hung out at the Old Kentucky Bar-B-Q near 18th & Vine. The granite stones that were used to build B.B.'s bbq pit in 1950 came from the gravel streets down-town where they served as crosswalks.... Perhaps Joe Turner once high stepped across these same granite stones. The granite stones hold heat, allowing a slow-smoked cooking process. Briskets are smoked 14-16 hours and ribs 10-12 hours, using an indirect heat source fueled by hickory wood. All meats on our menu, including sausage and chicken, are slow-smoked on the over 50 year old pit. When the blues music floats off the bandstand, it wafts across your plate of bbq, imparting a flavor you can only get in Kansas City at B.B.'s Lawnside Bar-B-Q...
